Embedded Systems Engineer
Context
TERASi builds compact E-band wireless communication systems for defense, telecom, and industrial markets. The electronics team covers RF design and architecture, embedded hardware and PCB design, and lab testing. We are now bringing embedded software fully in house. This person will own embedded software development and system integration across the product range, and will build and lead the embedded systems team as the company grows.
Why Join Us Now
Terasi is at an inflection point — we have real defence, telecom, and industrial customers waiting on systems we're actively building out, and the embedded software layer is being built from the ground up, right now. This isn't a role where you inherit a mature codebase and patch around the edges — you'll be the one defining the architecture, the conventions, and the team itself, from day one. High stakes, fast pace, and a small team means your work will directly shape nearly everything that ships. If you want outsized influence over how a defence-tech hardware company's software gets built — and the chance to grow into leading that function as we scale — this is about as good a moment as it gets.
The Role
Own embedded software development for the product range. Immediate work: firmware development within the RU1's FreeRTOS architecture, contributing to architecture decisions as the system evolves, and developing the higher level gimbal control software — pulling data from the drone flight controller and gimbal IMU, processing it, and commanding off-the-shelf gimbal motor controllers. The person develops, tests, and iterates this software hands-on in the lab, working closely with the hardware engineers, and is expected to take ownership and drive work forward independently.
What We're Looking For
Must-haves:
5+ years working at the intersection of embedded software and hardware, with the ability to independently debug and validate hardware in a lab environment — comfortable bringing up boards, working through hardware-software integration issues, and troubleshooting at the bench
Expert embedded C/C++
RTOS-based firmware development, ideally FreeRTOS: task design, timing, interrupt handling
Microcontroller programming on modern platforms (RP2350, ESP32 or similar)
Serial protocols in practice: UART, I2C, SPI, debugging on real hardware
Motor control or motion systems experience: closed-loop control, IMU data processing, commanding motor controllers
Solid working proficiency in Python — comfortable writing scripts and tools for test automation, data processing, and lab debugging
Practical, hands-on experience with Linux
Self-directed: identifies what needs doing and takes action
Nice-to-haves:
Experience with networking protocols and stacks on embedded systems (e.g., TCP/IP, Ethernet drivers), including bring-up and debugging of network connectivity on custom hardware
Drone or flight controller ecosystem experience (e.g. MAVLink)
Interest in growing into a technical lead role as the team expands
What You Won't Need to Own
PCB design, power delivery, and embedded hardware are covered by the embedded electronics engineer. RF design and architecture sit with the senior RF engineer. Production test software has a dedicated owner. This person is the software and system integration counterpart to the hardware team, so clear interfaces and communication with the hardware engineers matter.

Role is on site at the lab.
